A total of 165 students have registered for the inaugural cohort of the Health Sciences Programmes at the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). This programme showcases over 300 courses launched through a collaboration with Medversity, a Healthcare EdTech firm that adopts a blended learning approach.
The virtual inauguration took place on Tuesday via Zoom. Notably, 141 of the enrolled students are female. Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the significance of this partnership in enhancing the nation’s capability to cultivate highly skilled medical professionals. “We anticipate that the courses will significantly enhance the skills of our doctors and nurses, enabling them to provide top-notch medical care to the citizens of Guyana in the future,” Dr. Anthony remarked.
With several new hospitals in development, the demand for adept medical practitioners is rising. Course participants will engage in online learning and earn certificates upon successful completion, with each student receiving two certificates as part of the programme.
Gerald Jaideep, the CEO of Medvarsity, expressed optimism about the future of the partnership, stating, “We aim for this collaboration to expand, enhancing healthcare outcomes for medical professionals and the public alike.” GOAL’s director, Jacob Opadeyi, highlighted that ongoing efforts are being made to enrich training options for aspiring medical experts.
This initiative is a part of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) commitment from its 2020 manifesto to offer 25,000 scholarships, furthering higher education opportunities for individuals pursuing advanced degrees.
