“We have the people!” This powerful declaration resonated throughout Albion Road on Sunday as Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), addressed the largest gathering yet in anticipation of the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
Dr. Jagdeo began his speech by honoring the party’s founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan. He expressed that Jagan would have taken pride in the growth and unwavering dedication of the PPP/C to his legacy. “Cheddi Jagan would have been proud of the PPP/C’s dedication to justice and unity, which continues to guide our mission today,” he stated.
He reminded his supporters of Jagan’s vision, highlighting the critical importance of national unity for sustainable development. “I stand here with immense pride, and I know you share that pride,” he asserted, emphasizing the need for strong leadership to steer the country toward progress.
Dr. Jagdeo criticized the opposition, particularly for their misleading claims about the 2020 elections. He warned citizens to remain vigilant against these falsehoods and expressed concern for communities neglected by the previous administration.
Citing the devastating closure of the Rose Hall Sugar Estate, he condemned the opposition’s current plans to convert sugar land for marijuana cultivation and stressed the importance of the PPP/C’s job initiatives, particularly for women. On infrastructure, he promised further development under the PPP/C, reaffirming that significant progress would only be realized with them in leadership.
In conclusion, Dr. Jagdeo urged for unity and vigilance among the citizens to secure Guyana’s future.
