A New Era of Education in Guyana
The vision for a high-quality education in Guyana is no longer just aspirational; it is becoming a tangible reality due to substantial government investments in educational infrastructure. During the inauguration of the new Brickdam Secondary School, President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasized the government’s strong commitment to achieving universal secondary education for all children by September 2026, regardless of their location.
The newly built Brickdam Secondary, which features 22 state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with smart technology, exemplifies this commitment. President Ali underscored the importance of a well-rounded education, advocating for a balance between academic learning and physical education. He proposed that schools allocate Friday afternoons to sports and recreational activities, reflecting a shift towards fostering complete human development.
Since 2020, the government has invested nearly $600 billion into the education sector—enhancing infrastructure and supporting educators. Ali highlighted that improved teacher training and compensation are vital for delivering exceptional education to students. The ultimate aspiration is to create an inclusive and equitable educational system that develops skills, knowledge, and values needed for a rapidly evolving world.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced that the new facility will serve over 485 students with a dedicated team of trained teachers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transforming educational landscapes.
