In a passionate address delivered before Venezuela’s elections on the Governor for the contested Essequibo region, President Irfaan Ali firmly proclaimed that “now and forever, all of Essequibo belongs to all of Guyana.” Speaking to a large audience at Anna Regina during a patriotic concert, he highlighted Venezuela’s persistent aggressions and intimidation towards Guyana, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peace and its ongoing case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
President Ali criticized Venezuela’s claims over the Essequibo waters as unrealistic, asserting Guyana’s rightful actions in seeking reinforcement of the 1899 Arbitral Award, which established territorial rights. He stated, “Today, all of Guyana unites to tell Venezuela it is mistaken. Essequibo belongs to Guyana, and we have insisted on our exclusive rights in maritime areas.” Ali addressed recent incidents where armed groups from Venezuela targeted Guyanese military personnel, holding Venezuela accountable under international law for ensuring its territory is not a base for attacks.
Ali emphasized that there would be no negotiations regarding Guyana’s borders, citing the 1899 award as a definitive agreement. He concluded by reiterating the strength of Guyana’s position, stressing that any resolution would strictly occur through the ICJ. The event saw an enthusiastic turnout, with participants proudly displaying the national colors and engaging in cultural performances.
The Guyana Defence Force has ramped up border patrols in light of recent tensions, ensuring the protection of its territorial integrity.
