Nigel Hughes, leader of the Alliance for Change (AFC), recently affirmed that the party is not insisting on being the Presidential candidate in coalition discussions with APNU. Rather, the AFC seeks a consensus candidate to represent the coalition, distinct from APNUās current choice, Aubrey Norton.
In a post on social media, Hughes strongly dismissed any āmischaracterizationsā about the ongoing coalition negotiations. He expressed the AFCās commitment to finding a consensus candidate who could embody a genuine third-party representation. The party has suggested several qualified independent candidates, including Carl Greenidge, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, yet these suggestions have not been accepted by APNU. Hughes noted that APNUās insistence on a specific candidate without compromise has stalled progress towards unity.
Recent talks have reignited discussions among party leaders, with divergent views surfacing regarding the coalitionās formation. Problems around the distribution of parliamentary seats and the selection of a presidential nominee have emerged as key issues, reflecting deeper tensions between the parties.
Despite the challenges, Hughes highlighted that the AFCās historical policies, principled leadership, and achievements play a vital role in ensuring any coalition is effective in delivering for Guyanese citizens.
