The Alliance For Change (AFC) is gearing up to participate in the General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1. Despite a lack of collaboration with the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which ended in April, the AFC is looking to partner with individuals who share their vision.
Party leader Nigel Hughes expressed satisfaction with the efforts made to unify the opposition, stating that the AFC remains dedicated to prioritizing the interests of Guyana. He emphasized their commitment to deliver optimal choices for the electorate, despite the challenges faced in negotiations.
In a separate development, APNU, led by Aubrey Norton, is moving forward with a coalition involving the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA), previously part of the 2015-2020 Cummingsburg Accord. Hughes remains optimistic about the AFC’s prospects and hinted at exciting announcements within the next three months, although no discussions have taken place regarding a partnership with billionaire Azruddin Mohamed, who is also eyeing the presidency.
Welcoming increased competition in the presidential race, Hughes believes it will lead to better offerings for the electorate. Meanwhile, AFC Chairman David Patterson is working to establish alliances with like-minded individuals ahead of the elections, noting that nomination possibilities remain open until the official deadline.
The AFC is assembling a strong candidate team, focusing on pressing issues such as the cost of living, governance, Indigenous rights, education, health reform, taxation, and infrastructure development. Their plans and announcements are also being communicated to Indigenous communities in the Kapohn language.
