The Alliance For Change (AFC) has put forth a series of proposals aimed at addressing the escalating border tensions with Venezuela. Among these is the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee dedicated to Territorial Integrity. Cathy Hughes, an executive member of the AFC, emphasized the need for a unified response to Venezuela’s provocations, advocating for a committee comprising representatives from all major political factions, civil society, and diplomatic entities to convene quarterly.
Additionally, Hughes called for regular classified briefings for the opposition regarding evolving legal, diplomatic, military, and political matters concerning the border dispute. Furthermore, she suggested that civic education initiatives be led by the Ministries of Education and Culture.
To bolster solidarity, Hughes proposed a joint parliamentary mission—including opposition and civil society representatives—to key international capitals such as Washington, London, and Beijing. “This will project a unified Guyanese stance on our sovereignty,” she remarked.
Despite these recommendations, Hughes expressed concern about the administration’s lack of commitment to inclusive dialogue. While the National Assembly voiced support for diplomatic efforts to uphold Guyana’s territorial integrity, Hughes criticized the government’s motion for lacking concrete strategies against Venezuelan threats, particularly regarding upcoming Venezuelan elections. She reiterated that the border issue transcends political boundaries, underscoring the necessity for national unity and collaboration in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
