The Alliance For Change (AFC) has officially cancelled the memberships of executives Juretha Fernandes, Sherod Duncan, and Deonarine “Ricky” Ramsaroop due to their confirmed shift to the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). They will be included in APNU’s candidate list for the upcoming General and Regional Elections set for September 1, 2025.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the AFC revealed that attempts to seek clarification from the members went unanswered after media reports surfaced about their new alignment. The AFC confirmed the defection by verifying their official membership with APNU.
This development forms part of a deteriorating coalition negotiation process between AFC and APNU. The AFC had submitted a final proposal advocating for a power-sharing arrangement, which included APNU nominating the Presidential candidate while the AFC would choose the Prime Ministerial candidate—consistent with their previous coalition. However, the APNU responded by insisting on also selecting the AFC’s Prime Minister candidate, a condition the AFC found unacceptable.
Fernandes, a prominent fixture within the AFC, has been appointed as APNU’s Prime Ministerial candidate. Despite the disappointment stemming from these departures, the AFC has extended its best wishes to the trio, reiterating its commitment to democratic principles in political practices.
In closing, the AFC cautioned against any informal agreements that disrupt the established negotiation protocols.
