During a press conference held on Friday, AFC leader Nigel Hughes unveiled a comprehensive transport plan that aims to connect Mahaica to Durban Park and Diamond, positioning it as a key component of the party’s infrastructure agenda ahead of the 2025 elections.
Hughes detailed initiatives for each administrative region, emphasizing the importance of constructing new roads, landing sites, and transport hubs to bolster agricultural and other economic activities. He reiterated the party’s commitment to the “25 by 2025” initiative, a CARICOM target championed by President Irfaan Ali, which seeks to decrease burdensome food imports by 25% within the next two years.
Region Four is set for significant transportation improvements, with Hughes announcing plans for an urban transport center at Durban Park, drawing inspiration from a similar model in Jamaica. This revamped transportation network will feature a light rail and rapid bus service connecting Diamond and Mahaica to Durban Park, marking a pivotal shift in the region’s transit ecosystem.
Additionally, Hughes proposed the establishment of a deepwater port in Clonbrook, Region Five, while envisioning Region Seven as a focal point for hydropower and renewable energy initiatives.
