The Alliance For Change (AFC) has faced a significant setback as its efforts to assert its influence have resulted in rejection and widening internal divisions. Recently, the AFC’s overtures to the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) were roundly dismissed, as confirmed by the party on Wednesday.
The AFC’s membership took a further blow when three of its parliamentarians defected to APNU, with one of them, Juretha Fernandes, reportedly being considered as a running mate for APNU Leader Aubrey Norton in the upcoming General and Regional Elections on September 1.
Initially, the AFC sought substantial power in cabinet appointments, aiming for key positions such as the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and Attorney General. However, after APNU rejected these demands, the AFC proposed settling for a 35% share of political representation, which was also turned down.
The AFC stated that APNU’s insistence on proposing the AFC’s Prime Ministerial candidate breached established negotiation protocols, which they deemed unacceptable. After months of discussions regarding a coalition, disagreements over power dynamics have stalled progress.
In light of recent defections, including Sherod Duncan and Deonarine βRickyβ Ramsaroop joining APNU, the AFC has formally canceled their memberships. The AFC, in response to these changes, has underscored its commitment to its foundational principles and remains vigilant in its political journey.
