As Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) enters a new growth phase, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed that agriculture remains a foundational element of the region’s economy and community life.
During a recent business forum, he urged local private sector leaders to prioritize agriculture in the region’s development agenda. Dr. Ali noted, “This region has long been one of Guyana’s agricultural backbones, steeped in a rich tradition of sugar, rice, and cash-crop production. Despite the emergence of oil and gas, agriculture remains intertwined with the socio-economic identity of this area.”
Dr. Ali cautioned that while modernization is important, it should not compromise the longstanding agricultural sectors that have supported families and communities. “Modernization and diversification are vital, yet they must not come at the expense of industries that nourish our populace,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for cohesive planning, asserting that a shared vision is crucial for purposeful development. “Without a clear plan, we risk disorganization and reactive strategies,” he explained.
Highlighting ongoing transformative projects, the President expressed optimism about Region Three evolving into a vibrant economic center, complete with improving infrastructure and commercial offerings. He declared his vision for the area as one where agriculture and industry coexist harmoniously, offering abundant opportunities.
Dr. Ali’s remarks reflect the region’s rapid infrastructural and economic growth. He called on the private sector to invest in sustainable practices while respecting agricultural traditions to ensure Region Three’s role as a cornerstone of Guyana’s food security and social welfare. The government’s significant investments in infrastructure underline this commitment, laying a solid foundation for continued progress and prosperity.
