A 16-year-old high school student was subjected to a traumatic experience when an artificial intelligence (AI) gun detection system mistakenly flagged his bag of chips as a firearm.
The incident occurred at Kenwood High School in Essex, Maryland, on October 20, 2025. According to body camera footage, police officers surrounded the student, ordering him to the ground and handcuffing him, before realizing that the AI system had made an error.
Student Taki Allen recounted his ordeal, describing how he was approached by police with guns drawn, only to be told that the object in question was a bag of chips. ‘AI’s not the best,’ one officer was quoted as saying, highlighting the limitations of the technology used.
The incident has left many questioning the reliability and effectiveness of AI-powered security systems in schools.
