The Brazilian national team manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has received a one-year prison sentence from a Spanish court for tax evasion; however, he will not serve any time behind bars. Ancelotti, who previously managed Chelsea and Everton, was found guilty of failing to pay 1 million euros (£830,000) in taxes on his salary during his initial term with Real Madrid from 2013 to 2015.
While he avoids incarceration, Ancelotti is required to pay a fine of 386,361.93 euros (£333,045.92). Now 66 years old, he wrapped up his second tenure at Real Madrid at the end of the last season before taking on the role of Brazil’s manager.
Under Spanish law, defendants are typically spared jail time for non-violent offenses involving sentences of under two years, particularly if they have no prior convictions. In his court testimony, Ancelotti claimed he never intended to evade taxes, stating, “I never thought about committing fraud,” and added that he entrusted his financial advisors with his salary structure, which he believed was customary among players and coaches at the time. Notably, he fully repaid his tax owed in December 2021.
Similar cases of high-profile convictions in the football world include Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who faced significant fines instead of prison sentences for their respective tax evasion cases.
