On Sunday, May 25, 2025, President Dr. Irfaan Ali declared September 1, 2025, as the date for E-Day 2025, during his speech at Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary celebration. This date follows consultations with the Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), (rtd) Justice Claudette Singh, regarding the Commission’s preparedness to oversee the upcoming General and Regional Elections.
According to Section 70 (3) of the Constitution, a government remains in place for five years from the date of the National Assembly’s meeting after any dissolution. This five-year period will begin five years post the Parliament’s initial meeting on September 1, 2020. The last elections took place on March 2, 2020.
Notably, an international Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the 2020 elections uncovered evidence of collusion among GECOM officials aimed at manipulating results for the APNU+AFC coalition. The CoI’s findings pointed to significant attempts to sabotage the vote-counting process, implicating officials such as Lowenfield, Myers, and Mingo, who face ongoing legal proceedings while out on cash bail.
Per Section 61 of the Constitution, the next elections must occur within three months following any parliamentary dissolution.
