During a recent campaign rally in Linden, Attorney-at-Law Ronald Daniels of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) party has clarified the party’s funding plans, stating that they do not have the funds to hand out cash grants to Guyanese citizens. Instead, APNU aims to ‘open up access’ to existing resources, which belong to the people.
Daniels’ statement appears to contradict the party’s earlier promise of a $1 million per household grant, unveiled during their election campaign launch in Georgetown last month. The proposal, championed by coalition partner Dr. David Hinds, aims to provide direct cash transfers worth $1 million to each citizen by 2025.
The APNU party has proposed allocating 58% of the 2025 budget towards direct cash transfers, which would benefit a significant portion of the population. The initiative is designed to provide a liveable income, allowing Guyanese to plan, save, and invest more effectively.
It’s worth noting that earlier this year, APNU leader Dr. Aubrey Norton had promised similar cash grants, but with a fixed schedule. While Norton has criticized the current government’s $100,000 cash grant initiative, he assures that an APNU administration would prioritize providing transfers aimed at ensuring all citizens receive a decent standard of living.
