A man, aged 40, has been taken into police custody following an armed robbery that occurred late at night in Georgetown, where a young sales clerk was reportedly attacked and robbed of an unknown sum of money.
The suspect, named Dwayne John, residing at Lot 56 Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, allegedly threatened 20-year-old Avinesh Singh with a gun around 11:15 PM on Monday. The robbery took place at the Kent Snackett/Cheese Please Stand on Cornhill Street, Stabroek.
At the time, Singh was supervising the business when John entered, brandishing a firearm and striking him in the face. John then seized a box containing cash and made his escape.
The money reportedly belonged to Ken Youderian Camacho, a local businessman from Houston, East Bank Demerara, who owns the food outlet.
Following the robbery, Singh, along with two other individuals, chased after John, who fired several shots in their direction as he fled into Leopold Street. Responding promptly to the situation, nearby police patrols apprehended the suspect on Leopold Street, where they noticed he had sustained a chest wound.
During interrogation, John purportedly admitted to discarding both the firearm and the stolen cash in a drainage area while escaping. He led officers to the site, though a subsequent search failed to recover the weapon or cash. As the investigation continues, John remains in custody, and police are working to establish the total amount taken in the robbery.
