A 52-year-old man from San Antonio, Robert Herrera, was apprehended on Thursday after allegedly issuing violent threats against President Donald Trump on a social media platform ahead of the president’s visit to Kerrville, Texas.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas announced that Herrera had been charged with making threats against the president as well as interstate threatening communications. These threats emerged on a local news outlet’s Facebook page that was discussing Trump’s visit following significant flooding that occurred on July 4.
According to the Department of Justice, under the alias “Robert Herrer,” Herrera made a chilling remark stating “I won’t miss” beneath a photo of Trump surrounded by Secret Service agents, referencing a previous assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Following interactions with other users, he shared a photo of himself holding what appeared to be a rifle.
Authorities arrested Herrera on the same day, and should he be convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for each charge. Special Agent Aaron Tapp from the FBI underscored the distinction between free speech and making threats, emphasizing that the FBI takes threats of violence very seriously.
President Trump, along with first lady Melania Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, was in Kerrville surveying flood damage when the situation unfolded. The investigation into Herrera’s threats continues, with the Secret Service prioritizing threats against protected individuals.
