Authorities in Portland, Oregon, have apprehended several individuals linked to a violent riot near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. On Thursday, those arrested faced charges such as assaulting federal officers and endangering safety on government premises.
Among the accused, Julie Winters, 46, is charged with felony attempted assault of a federal officer. Aziel Chambers, 20, faces misdemeanor charges for assaulting a federal officer and creating a hazard, while Rachel Jean Pope, 28, has been charged with misdemeanor assault.
The unrest escalated on Tuesday night when a group assembled near the ICE office, further intensifying weeks of targeted antagonism against the facility. As the situation unfolded, protesters attempted to ignite an American flag, prompting federal agents to intervene using non-lethal methods.
Allegations include Pope throwing a metal canister at officers, while Winters tried to ignite a device and brandished knives during her confrontation with law enforcement. Although she aimed a knife at an officer, no injuries were reported.
Chambers is also accused of aiming a laser pointer at an officer’s eye and failing to comply with lawful orders. The legal ramifications for the charges include severe potential penalties, with serious assault charges carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The three remain in the legal process, with Winters held in custody and the others released under specific conditions.
