A 36-year-old man awaits his sentencing after admitting to the tragic murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend in a shocking crime witnessed by a child. Terrence Thomas, also known as “Oosh,” pleaded guilty to the capital offence before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the High Court in Demerara, regarding the murder of 28-year-old Loretha Simon.
The brutal act, which left the community reeling, occurred on January 27, 2022, at Simon’s mother’s residence in Sophia, Greater Georgetown. The court has scheduled Thomas’ sentencing for August 18, 2025.
Prosecutor Darin Chan characterized the incident as a premeditated, violent act that unfolded in broad daylight. Reports indicate that Simon was at her mother’s home preparing to cook when Thomas unexpectedly arrived and violently attacked her.
Using a knife, he inflicted multiple stab wounds on Simon in front of her nine-year-old sister, causing lifelong trauma. After the assault, Thomas fled the scene, leaving the gruesome weapon behind, but was later captured and charged with murder. It was noted that Simon was several weeks pregnant at the time of her untimely death.
Justice Chandra-Hanif is expected to weigh both aggravating and mitigative factors as she approaches the sentencing phase.
