Barry Morphew, charged with the murder of his wife Suzanne Morphew, is likely to pursue a defense strategy focusing on an “alternate suspect,” as suggested by Colin McCallin, a former Colorado deputy district attorney. The case escalated after Suzanne disappeared on Mother’s Day 2020, with Barry Morphew arrested later in Arizona and extradited to Colorado.
Initially charged in 2021, those charges were dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct. Suzanne’s body was discovered in September 2023, and an autopsy revealed traces of the deer tranquilizer BAM in her bone marrow, a substance for which only Barry held a prescription in the local area.
With a witness list now submitted, which includes both daughters of the couple, McCallin believes that Barry’s legal team will leverage any evidence they can linking the murder to another individual. In particular, he highlighted the presence of unknown DNA collected from Suzanne’s Range Rover, indicating the potential involvement of others in the case.
Even with compelling evidence, McCallin cautioned that the prosecution’s case remains largely circumstantial. While certain chemicals have been identified, the timeline and circumstances surrounding Suzanne’s death are still unclear. This ambiguity may provide an avenue for the defense as they navigate the complexities of the case.
