A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody after being charged with serious offenses related to domestic violence, including wounding. Karran Sukhan, hailing from #2 Village in East Canje Berbice, made an appearance at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Mathias.
At the hearing, Sukhan pleaded guilty to several charges including Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Threatening Language, and Threatening Behavior directed at his 20-year-old partner, Joanna, with the incidents reported to have occurred on June 6th.
The charges stem from Section 141 (a) and Section 30 (a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:02. Magistrate Mathias decided to remand Sukhan in prison until his next court appearance scheduled for June 23rd.
In a bold move, Joanna took to Facebook to share her harrowing experience of abuse throughout their six-year relationship, highlighting her daring escape from the toxic environment with her two children. She outlined the progression of their relationship from romantic beginnings in 2018 to severe violence by the following year. Despite having reported the abuse to the police five times, Joanna mentioned her encounters with indifference from law enforcement, including an officer who irresponsibly blamed her for not leaving sooner.
In response to her post, Region Six Police Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus announced that the involved officer would face disciplinary action, and they are actively working to ensure justice is served against Sukhan.
