The Scout Association of Guyana is redefining preparedness in the modern era.
When one thinks of scouting, images of hiking, camping, and cooking might come to mind. However, the Guyana Scout Association, which has been imparting values of teamwork and discipline since 1909, is evolving these traditions to incorporate modern, tech-oriented activities.
In an enlightening conversation with Pepperpot Magazine, Chief Commissioner Yonnick David explains that scouting encompasses much more than outdoor adventures. As a lifelong scout from Georgetown, he believes the organization plays a vital role in keeping children equipped with essential life skills in a rapidly changing society.
David reminisces about his journey in scouting that began at the age of seven, emphasizing the foundational values of independence and discipline instilled during his formative years. He states that scouting is a diverse platform where children can engage in various activities centered on personal growth.
Today, the association has over six hundred members across multiple regions, fostering a supportive community that addresses contemporary social issues faced by youth, including bullying and substance abuse.
While the scouts focus on providing skills to navigate life’s challenges, they also strive to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive. Moreover, the introduction of STEM initiatives demonstrates the scouts’ commitment to bridging traditional practices with modern technology, preparing youth for future endeavors.
