In response to intense global criticism regarding its role in the ongoing starvation crisis in Gaza, Israel has rolled out new humanitarian measures, as reported by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). These actions aim to enhance the humanitarian response, including airdrops of aid, the first of which was conducted by Israel, followed by the UAE’s air force.
The IDF has also said it will implement a “tactical pause in military activity” in certain areas and establish designated humanitarian corridors, attempting to counter claims of intentional starvation. However, Hamas has dismissed these moves as mere propaganda, accusing Israel of attempting to cleanse its image on the international stage.
Despite Israel’s assertions of not being responsible for the humanitarian crisis, there is widespread skepticism from its European allies, the UN, and humanitarian organizations. The recent measures might signal an acknowledgment from Israel of the need for heightened efforts in humanitarian aid, especially as leaders from Britain, France, and Germany have demanded the lifting of aid restrictions to address starvation in Gaza.
Israel has transitioned to a new aid distribution system with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), aiming to replace the UN’s operational framework amid allegations of aid misappropriation by Hamas. Nonetheless, the UN has criticized this initiative as militarized, and more than 1,000 Palestinians reportedly have died seeking food under these conditions. UN humanitarian affairs officials have called the situation the worst it has ever been, demanding that Israel ensure safer access to food for civilians.
Critics highlight that without substantial changes to aid transit and guarantees for the safety of those receiving aid, the humanitarian crisis will persist. This uncertainty underscores an ongoing international dialogue focusing on humanitarian laws amid allegations against Israeli leaders of committing war crimes related to starvation.
