A fishing captain along with three crewmates was successfully rescued on Monday after their vessel, the Sea Knight, sank approximately 20 miles offshore from the Pomeroon River around 7 PM on Sunday.
The ill-fated ship, owned by Pritpaul Singh Investment Inc., submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, leaving the crew adrift at sea. Captain Monzil Thomas managed to remain buoyant thanks to a life ring, and he was rescued near the mouth of the Pomeroon River by another fishing boat, 2-Sister.
The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) received notice of the incident at about 10:45 AM on Monday, initiating a rapid response by the Emergency Operations Unit, led by Captain John Flores. This prompted a swift search-and-rescue operation supported by the Guyana Coast Guard, directed by Commander David Shamsudeen. They utilized both aerial and ground surveillance methods.
Within hours, they located the remaining crew members: Delon Sandy, Patrick McRae, and John McRae Jr.. They were found adrift approximately six nautical miles from the Pomeroon River’s mouth, all equipped with life jackets, ensuring their safety.
