Six members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were recently honored with the Border Defence Medal Class One and promoted in rank for their exceptional courage during an armed encounter earlier this year along the Cuyuni River, near the Venezuelan border.
This prestigious award was presented by the President, acknowledging the soldiers’ remarkable bravery, strategic discipline, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity.
The award ceremony took place at the Colonel Ulric Pilgrim Officer Cadet School Drill Square, where Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan recognized the soldiers in front of their peers. Among those honored were Lieutenant Ansel Murray, Staff Sergeants Andre Fraser and Kevon Davis, Sergeant Kevin Henery, Corporal Troy Yorrick, and Lance Corporal Ezra Samuels.
These soldiers were part of a six-man patrol from the 1 Infantry Battalion conducting a resupply mission when they were unexpectedly attacked on February 17, 2025. Despite sustaining injuries, they returned fire, effectively protecting themselves and showcasing exemplary military professionalism. The subsequent day, they were evacuated for medical assistance.
Brigadier Khan praised their combat instincts and resilience under pressure, underscoring that their bravery not only reflects individual valor but also is vital for national safety. He emphasized that their decisive action resonates throughout the force, inspiring confidence and highlighting the utmost importance of vigilance and preparedness in defending Guyana’s sovereignty.
The Border Defence Medal Class One symbolizes national gratitude towards those who serve courageously in the face of danger.
