In a groundbreaking move, the Childcare and Protection Agency brought together 200 children from across Guyana for its inaugural national Children’s Conference. This historic event provided a platform for young voices to be heard, sharing their experiences, asking questions, and offering recommendations to policymakers.
The conference was designed to give children a sense of belonging and empower them to shape the society they live in. Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, emphasized the importance of making this event an annual occurrence, with potential future locations across regions to ensure broader participation.
Topics discussed included sexual and reproductive health, children’s rights, mental health, accessibility, and inclusion. Children from diverse backgrounds, including those in state care and vulnerable communities, participated in sessions focused on fostering a sense of inclusivity, awareness, and empowerment.
The conference marked a significant step towards inclusive child-centered policy development in Guyana, with the aim of ensuring children’s voices continue to influence decisions that affect their lives. The theme ‘Empowering Children for a Safer Future’ highlights the agency’s commitment to creating a safer and stronger society for all.
