The construction of the $350 million Shulinab Secondary School has officially commenced, marking a significant step towards achieving universal secondary education in Guyana’s remote Indigenous communities. The Ministry of Education has launched this project with great fanfare, turning over the sod on Tuesday to kick-start the development.
The new school will cater to 250 students and boasts a comprehensive infrastructure designed to support both learners and teachers. The project has been awarded 20 construction contracts through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) to execute the wide-ranging works, including classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, and more.
According to the Ministry of Education, this initiative reflects a new model of school development in the hinterland, focusing on smaller, community-based schools that avoid large centralized institutions. Minister Priya Manickchand highlighted that this approach will help bridge the education gap in hinterland regions and support the government’s commitment to equitable development.
The construction of the Shulinab Secondary School is part of a broader national effort to build over 40 new secondary schools across Guyana, particularly in Regions One to Nine. With each school being built, Guyana moves closer to fulfilling its promise of ensuring that every child has access to quality secondary education within their own community.
