In a striking turn of events, Bryan Kohberger has admitted his guilt in the tragic murders of four University of Idaho students through a written confession. The document, released by the Fourth Judicial District Court in Ada County, reveals that Kohberger unlawfully entered the students’ off-campus residence on November 13, 2022, with the intent to commit murder.
With chilling premeditation, he went on to stab Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin multiple times using a large knife, believed to be a Ka-Bar. While the weapon has yet to be found, Kohberger’s DNA was discovered on the knife sheath located beside Mogen’s body.
Dated July 1, the confession came just one day before Kohberger entered a guilty plea to all charges. He is set to face formal sentencing on July 23, where he is likely to receive four consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to an extra ten-year sentence. Furthermore, Kohberger waived his rights to appeal or seek any future sentence reduction.
This plea deal has sparked mixed reactions among the victims’ families, with some expressing support while others, like Goncalves’ family, have vehemently opposed it. Kohberger was scheduled to go to trial next month, which would have allowed jurors to decide on his sentencing between life imprisonment or the death penalty.
