After months of rigorous training and dedication, numerous young fighters are set to gather at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall this Friday (July 25) for the highly anticipated Andrew Lewis Novice Championship, hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).
This event, which runs through Sunday (July 27), serves as a pivotal platform for newcomers in the boxing arena. The GBA has made significant efforts this year to uplift and showcase its youth boxers.
Steve Ninvalle, President of the GBA, emphasized the importance of this championship, stating that it is “one of the most significant events on our calendar.” He also expressed his close observation of the potential athletes stepping into the boxing ring, highlighting their role as the foundation of boxing in Guyana.
“Their journey in the sport starts here,” Ninvalle remarked, commending coaches and trainers dedicated to developing these emerging talents.
This championship is crucial for identifying the next wave of national boxing talent. Last year, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Boxing Gym excelled, earning the title of Best Overall Gym, thanks to their disciplined preparation.
National Coach Lennox Daniels acknowledged the efforts of the GDF but also welcomed emerging competition from other gyms aiming to topple the reigning champions. “The Novices reveal raw talent and the desire to prove oneself, which adds excitement to this championship,” Daniels noted.
Last year’s event showcased remarkable talents, including Jagwan Milo as the Best Novice Boxer and Kenisha Plass as the Best Female Boxer. This weekend promises to ignite the ring with the fervor and determination of young athletes striving for boxing excellence.
