The Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has announced plans for increased international oversight in the upcoming elections set for September 1. During a recent episode of his show, ‘Issues in the News,’ Nandlall highlighted that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government is keen on welcoming more accredited observer missions to ensure a transparent electoral process, following the reaffirmation of the Carter Center’s participation.
Nandlall elaborated on the historical significance of electoral observers in Guyana, pointing out that it was the PPP/C’s efforts over 28 years that led to the inclusion of international observers, a practice that began in 1992. Since then, every election has been certified as free and fair by these international bodies.
Expressing confidence in the electoral integrity, he stated, “We have nothing to hide. We want transparency,” while also acknowledging the need for vigilance against electoral misconduct. Nandlall emphasized that a larger presence of observer teams would enhance the safety and credibility of the electoral process.
Recently, the European Union solidified its commitment to election monitoring by signing an agreement to deploy a European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM), with plans laid out to facilitate its operations in the lead-up to the elections.
