Crystal Fisher’s decision to appeal to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in the Crystal Fisher v. Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) case has sparked widespread criticism from Attorney General Anil Nandlall. Nandlall describes the litigation as a ‘total abuse of the process of the court’ and warns that it could saddle the litigant with millions more in legal costs.
The CCJ’s decision to hear the appeal was met with skepticism by Nandlall, who questioned the competence of those behind the case. He described the language used by the judges as ‘scathing’ and noted that four judges had already described the case as ‘baseless’.
Nandlall expressed sympathy for Fisher, a member of Guyana’s Indigenous community from Region Nine, who now faces significant financial exposure due to the costly appeal process. He warned that if the case goes to the CCJ, those costs could run into millions more and ultimately fall on Fisher.
The Attorney General called on the attorney who filed the appeal to contribute to the costs, citing apparent mishandling of the matter. Nandlall reiterated that the CCJ should dismiss or shelve the appeal outright, as the matter is without merit and would only deepen the financial burden on the litigant.
