During a recent press briefing, a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that Guatemala’s recognition of the one-China principle is in its best interests. Spokesperson Lin Jian responded to Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo’s remarks made during his visit to Taiwan, reiterating that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of it.
Lin Jian asserted that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China. He noted that most nations globally recognize this principle, which he described as an unassailable international consensus.
The spokesperson criticized Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party for attempting to leverage international relationships for political gain, describing these efforts as misguided and ineffective against the historical trend favoring China’s reunification.
Currently, 183 nations maintain diplomatic ties with China, indicating a global alignment with the one-China policy. Lin urged countries to recognize this prevailing trend, listen to public opinion, and make informed decisions swiftly.
These statements reflect China’s position on its territorial integrity and its expectations of international allies, positioning the one-China principle as central to global diplomatic relations.
