In celebration of the 17th World Oceans Day, a significant report unveiling China’s innovative approach to ocean governance was introduced in Shanghai this past Sunday. Titled “A Maritime Community with a Shared Future and Sustainable Ocean Development – Joint Actions of China and Its Global Partners,” the document outlines strategies for enhancing ocean sustainability via four main avenues: technological advancement, collaborative rule-making, cultural exchanges, and maritime security.
This report emerged as a principal outcome from the 2025 Shanghai Forum dedicated to fostering a maritime community aligned with shared objectives. It was co-created by over 200 stakeholders, encompassing government officials, maritime industry players, academic representatives, and think tank analysts.
As the sixth anniversary of the proposal to construct a maritime community with shared values nears, Chu Beiping, the president of Shanghai Maritime University, remarked that China’s vision offers fresh insights for international partnerships amidst escalating maritime challenges. Awni Behnam, honorary president of the International Ocean Institute, highlighted the report’s significance in nurturing multilateral cooperation and aligning with the ethos of World Oceans Day.
Over 20 nations participated in the event to deliberate on global ocean governance and sustainability. They agreed that the report underscores China’s dedication to international collaboration, potentially enriching the UN Ocean Conference 2025, and fostering a global consensus on marine conservation and sustainable practices.
Rizka Ardya, a representative from Frontier Logistics Indonesia, emphasized that China’s shipping sector not only enhances its economy but also stabilizes global supply chains and nurtures shared development.
