A Chinese national has been apprehended for allegedly smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and providing misleading information to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. The Department of Justice announced that Chengxuan Han, a Ph.D. student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, faces charges of smuggling goods and making false statements.
Reports indicate that Han sent four packages to individuals at a University of Michigan laboratory from the PRC between 2024 and 2025, concealing biological material within. Upon arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa, Han’s inspection raised concerns, leading to the discovery that data on her electronic device had been deleted just days prior to her entry into the U.S.
During an FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) interview, Han allegedly confessed to shipping the packages, which included materials related to round worms, and admitted to her deceit during the inspection. U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. highlighted the incident as indicative of a troubling trend threatening national security.
Simultaneously, another Chinese national, Shenghua Wen, pled guilty to exporting military supplies to North Korea after years of illegal residence in the U.S. Wen’s activities were reportedly orchestrated at the behest of North Korean officials, reflecting a serious breach of U.S. laws regarding arms and technology.
