Protests ensued Thursday as federal ICE agents executed a raid on a marijuana farm in southern California, located north of Los Angeles. This operation targeted the facility, known as Glass House Farms, which is licensed by the state yet remains illegal under federal law due to allegations of employing undocumented workers.
As federal agents arrived armed with a warrant for illegal employment, a group of protesters gathered, leading to intense confrontations. To disperse the crowd, authorities resorted to using tear gas and smoke bombs, while military helicopters were deployed overhead, typically a tactic used to reveal hiding individuals.
Local officials, including Oxnard’s Mayor Luis Mc Arthur, criticized the actions of ICE, calling them “bold and aggressive.” He stated that such operations only serve to cause distress within the community and that he is considering legal options for response.
Reports indicate that four individuals required hospitalization, while others received on-site treatment. U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal expressed his dismay, stating, “This is deplorable. This should not be happening on our soil,” referring to the military-style presence of the agents.
This raid adds fuel to ongoing tensions in the region regarding immigration enforcement, particularly amid recent operations in Los Angeles that have drawn condemnation from local leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who criticized the current administration’s immigration policies.
