In an alarming incident on Sunday morning, two individuals were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after their small plane crashed into Long Island Sound, close to Branford, Connecticut. The Piper PA-32 was en route from Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Bridgeport when it declared an emergency to New York Air Traffic Control shortly before 10:30 a.m.
The aircraft, approximately eight miles from Tweed New Haven Airport, attempted an emergency landing but tragically went down into the water after hitting high tension power lines. The airport’s control tower quickly activated emergency response protocols, alerting the appropriate authorities. However, the plane was soon reported as having been downed.
The Coast Guard sprang into action, successfully retrieving both occupants, who were found to be in stable condition. They were transported to the Stony Creek Pier for medical evaluation before being taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as reported by the Branford Police Department.
Officials from the airport expressed their relief at the safe recovery of the individuals and extended gratitude to all emergency responders for their prompt and coordinated actions during the crisis. While the registration records of the plane list an owner from Newtown, Connecticut, the identities of those involved have yet to be disclosed.
