Tragedy struck in south-west Colombia as three soldiers lost their lives in a drone attack on a military checkpoint along the Naya River.
The incident, blamed on a dissident rebel group, has highlighted the growing threat of drones in the region.
According to authorities, four other security personnel were injured in the attack, bringing the total number of casualties to seven.
Drones have become increasingly common in Colombia in recent years, with 115 recorded incidents in 2024 alone, most of which were carried out by illegal armed groups.
The government has been working to improve its anti-drone technology to prevent such attacks, as revealed earlier this year.
The area around Buenaventura, a major hub for drug trafficking, was also hit hard, with the attack being attributed to offshoots of the Farc rebel group.
Military officials believe that one of the groups under the command of Iván Mordisco was behind the Tuesday’s drone attack.
Mordisco is known for his involvement in criminal activities such as extortion, illegal mining, and cocaine trafficking.
