Hours after his arrest, Shaka Phillips confessed to fatally shooting Linden teacher, Jenel Phillips, on Saturday night. The police reported that he admitted to disposing of the firearm in the Demerara River.
Following his confession, law enforcement took Phillips to the location where he claimed to have discarded the weapon; however, due to the river’s tide, recovery efforts were unsuccessful.
Phillips, known to some as ‘Concrete Man’, is accused of the murder that occurred during a wedding reception at the R & R hotel in Linden. The couple had recently separated, largely due to ongoing abuse that led Jenel to obtain a restraining order against him. Remarkably, Phillips is the father of her youngest child.
Sources indicate that Phillips arrived at the hotel in a state of anger, as Jenel was not responding to his calls. An argument erupted when he confronted her at the entrance, leading him to draw a handgun and fire at her. Jenel fled towards the hotel pool area during the confrontation but was pursued by Phillips. He fired two additional shots before fleeing the scene.
After the shooting, Phillips escaped on his bicycle and later claimed to have hidden in Amelia’s Ward before disposing of the gun. Authorities have started collecting eyewitness statements as they continue their investigation, with all interview recordings documented by the police.
