A new era in education is set to begin with the construction of the Christiansburg/Wismar Secondary School in Linden, Region 10, featuring advanced laboratories and athletic facilities. The state-of-the-art school aims to cultivate a comprehensive educational setting that prepares students for future success.
The groundbreaking ceremony for this $2.66 billion initiative took place recently, with Prime Minister Brigadier (Retβd) Mark Phillips emphasizing its significance within the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing Guyana’s education system.
This project is part of the “Guyana Strengthening Human Capital through Education Project,” supported by the World Bank, which seeks to improve the availability and quality of secondary and vocational education nationwide.
Covering 244,000 square feet, the new facility will include nine specialized blocks spread over approximately 67,000 square feet. Construction is expected to be completed in 17 months by PowerChina Jiangxi Electric Power Construction Company Limited.
Among its many features, the school will house an administrative center, fully-equipped classrooms, a multipurpose hall for various events, a dedicated science block with laboratories, vocational training areas, and an agricultural sector to promote modern farming practices.
This ambitious project will serve over 1,000 students, contributing to universal secondary education and ensuring a high-quality learning experience, as underscored by Education Minister Priya Manickchand.
Emphasizing long-term investment in educational infrastructure, Prime Minister Phillips stated that the facility will replace an overcrowded existing school, laying the groundwork for future career opportunities right within Linden.
