The Trump administration has officially greenlit the development of a distinctive immigration detention facility, humorously dubbed ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ situated within Florida’s Everglades. This facility is set to be constructed on a 30-square-mile plot near the Miami-Dade/Collier Training Facility, which previously housed an underused airport.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier revealed that the project aims to accommodate up to 5,000 criminal illegal immigrants, with Florida state officials kick-starting construction on Monday. Uthmeier believes this site is optimal for a temporary detention center, citing its relatively low-cost operation without the need for heavy security measures.
In a promotional video, he remarked, “If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide.” He predicts that the facility will become operational by the first week of July.
While the estimated annual cost to operate the site is around $450 million, reimbursement may be possible through FEMA. The endeavor aligns with the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to ramp up deportations of criminal illegal immigrants, targeting an ambitious goal of 3,000 arrests daily. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem emphasized the swift operational pace of this project as part of a broad strategy to enhance immigration enforcement.
