
On Saturday, Premier Li Qiang inaugurated the construction of a significant hydropower initiative along the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in Nyingchi City, situated in the Xizang Autonomous Region of China.
The ceremony, held at the Mainling hydropower station site, attracted representatives from key organizations, including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Power Construction Corporation of China. Local residents and members of an expert advisory committee were also present, highlighting the community’s involvement in the project.
This ambitious hydropower endeavor encompasses five cascading stations, with a total projected investment of approximately 1.2 trillion yuan (around $167.8 billion). The initiative aims to supply electricity for both external markets and local needs in Xizang.
Additionally, a recent inauguration ceremony in Beijing established the China Yajiang Group Co., Ltd., dedicated to ensuring the efficient construction and operation of the hydropower project, attended by Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing.
