A 24-year-old construction worker has been apprehended following a significant drug seizure on the Annai-Lethem Trail, where more than three pounds of marijuana were found in his belongings.
On Wednesday around 2 PM, police from the Lethem Police Station, acting on tips received, intercepted a minibus (#BAD 6117) operated by Andel Awar. The vehicle was transporting six passengers, including one Guyanese woman and five men, four of whom were Brazilians.
The driver and passengers consented to a search, requesting it to be conducted at the Lethem Police Station due to the oppressive heat and their fatigue. Two detectives then escorted the vehicle to the station.
Upon reaching the station, the passengers retrieved their items, and a thorough search ensued. The police discovered three parcels wrapped in clear plastic within a blue and grey haversack owned by Sedney Aubrey Johnson, also known as ‘Cooliebai’, from Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara.
The parcels, upon inspection, contained leaves, seeds, and stems believed to be cannabis, weighing approximately 1,478 grams (3.26 pounds). Johnson was cautioned and taken into custody as investigations are ongoing.
This incident has been officially confirmed by the Guyana Police Force.
