A Nigerian university is facing backlash after a disturbing video emerged, showing female students subjected to physical checks to confirm they were wearing bras before their exams. The footage, which went viral, captures female staff at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State touching students as they line up to enter the exam venue.
Although the institution has refrained from making an official statement, a student leader has defended the bra check as part of a dress code designed for a “distraction-free environment.” Critics, however, have denounced this practice as outdated and akin to sexual harassment.
Human Rights Network representatives voiced that these actions infringe on students’ rights and could lead to legal consequences. One student, who wished to remain anonymous, described how the university enforces a strict moral code, despite not being a religious establishment, with regular checks on attire.
In light of the controversy, student union president Muizz Olatunji asserted the need for a dress code to foster respect among students and staff. He noted that the policy encourages modest clothing and stated the union would pursue more respectful alternatives for addressing perceived indecency, emphasizing dignity in student interactions.
Founded in 1982, Olabisi Onabanjo University was renamed in 2001, reflecting the legacy of the state’s former governor.
