Scott Peterson, the convicted killer of his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son Conner, continues to face legal challenges despite serving over 18 years in prison. His lawyers have filed a petition to overturn his conviction, but experts say he is unlikely to ever walk free.
The case, which captivated the nation in 2002, saw Peterson convicted of murdering Laci and Conner after her disappearance on Christmas Eve that year. The remains of the family were found in the San Francisco Bay, and Peterson’s conviction has stood despite numerous appeals.
Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani says that while there may be new legal challenges to Peterson’s conviction, he is unlikely to ever leave prison. ‘Scott Peterson is spending the rest of his life in California state prison,’ Rahmani said. ‘He was originally sentenced to death, but on appeal, the California Supreme Court said that excluding certain jurors based on their views of the death penalty was a legal error.’
Rahmani points out that despite the continued litigation, the original case against Peterson remains strong, with several factors pointing to his guilt including his extramarital affair and suspicious behavior after Laci’s disappearance. ‘Her body ended up just miles away from where he was fishing that day,’ Rahmani said. ‘He had bought concrete. Her body was anchored with concrete. He dyed his hair, had cash, someone else’s ID, and camping gear — behavior consistent with someone trying to flee.’
