President Irfaan Ali has given the green light for a feasibility study on building a commercial railway link along the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara corridors. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the region, with construction expected to begin within the next six weeks.
This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to address infrastructure challenges in the country. In 2023, President Ali announced plans to revive the railways if his party won a second term in office. Since then, various highway projects have been completed or are underway, including the Ogle to Eccles four-lane highway and the Great Diamond to Buzz Bee Dam highway.
The new railway link will facilitate faster transportation, boost economic activities, and open up previously inaccessible areas to development. With Guyana having two public railways in the past but none currently operational, this project has the potential to transform the country’s infrastructure landscape.
