Demerara River Bridge Progresses Towards Completion
A significant achievement has been made in the construction of Guyana’s remarkable Demerara River Bridge, a project valued at US$260 million. The last bridge tower, P-35, was completed recently, marking a crucial milestone as over 90% of the bridge nears completion.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill celebrated the occasion alongside fellow officials and contractors, emphasizing the project’s progress and the anticipated August 31 completion date. The next steps involve finalizing the 17 cable-stayed sections that span 570 meters across the river.
Minister Edghill shared that by June 15, all girders on the eastern side will be installed, building on the earlier completion of the western side. He underlined that the bridge’s assembly is nearly complete, with only final touches like concrete pouring and surface installation remaining.
Despite various challenges, including inclement weather, Minister Edghill praised the collaboration between the government and contractors, highlighting effective project management under the current administration.
In addition to this infrastructure project being an essential commitment of President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s government since 2020, it symbolizes a significant step in elevating Guyana’s infrastructural capabilities. The bridge will be notable not just for its size, but for features like a bicycle lane and a high-span design that prevents disruptions from marine traffic.
Once operational, it promises to enhance regional connectivity and alleviate traffic issues while standing as a tribute to national pride through its Cacique Crown of Honour monument.
