The Ministry of Education is actively enhancing Guyana’s educational framework with the initiation of a new primary school in Diamond and the upcoming construction of a modern secondary school in Houston.
These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to improving educational access and quality nationwide. A recent press release reveals that the Diamond community will soon host a cutting-edge primary school capable of accommodating 750 students. Education Minister Priya Manickchand performed the groundbreaking ceremony for this two-storey building on Friday. Spanning over two acres, the facility will comprise 25 classrooms, administrative offices, a library, a waiting area, and a well-equipped sick bay.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the school will harness natural lighting to lower energy usage and include an IT Research Centre, along with specialized science labs for primary education. The robust design will utilize durable lightweight steel panels, ensuring a lifespan of over 75 years.
Enhancing the educational experience further, the compound will feature a playfield and various recreational facilities, while also meeting high safety standards with advanced fire suppression systems. The estimated cost for this project is $821,807,252, with a completion timeframe of approximately 10 months.
Simultaneously, Minister Manickchand also commenced construction for a new secondary school in Houston. This two-storey establishment, replacing the old Houston Secondary, will accommodate over 400 students across 16 classrooms. It aims to provide a comprehensive learning atmosphere, including administration offices, a library, and a counselling room, complemented by advanced science and IT facilities.
Valued at $296,916,480 and contracted to K&S General Contracting Inc., this project is set for a 17-month construction period with a one-year defects liability duration.
