Digicel has confirmed the immediate termination of its news platform Loop News across the Caribbean, alongside plans to cease operations for the sports broadcaster SportsMax by August 8. The telecommunications company has stated that these changes are part of a strategic shift towards scalable services aimed at businesses within the Digicel framework.
Liam Donnelly, Group Chief Business Officer, emphasized the importance of this transformation to enhance the company’s ability to offer secure and scalable solutions in the future. He expressed pride in the achievements of both Loop News and SportsMax but highlighted the necessity to focus on generating maximum value for customers and communities.
SportsMax, established in 2002, earned recognition for showcasing premier sporting events while Loop News, which started in 2014, became a reputable news source known for its engagement and accolades.
Looking forward, Digicel plans to concentrate on its new ventures including Trend Media and the recently acquired Symptai. This direction aims to broaden its ICT service offerings—including cloud solutions, cybersecurity, and digital advertising—to meet increasing regional demand for comprehensive managed solutions.
In light of the closures, Digicel has already notified affected employees and will provide transitional support as per local labor regulations. Donnelly extended gratitude to the teams behind these platforms and the audiences that embraced them over the years, recognizing their contributions as significant.
