Dr. Asha Kissoon, having resisted pressure from her political allies to relinquish her seat in the National Assembly, stands unapologetic about her choices. She asserted that her determination stemmed from experiencing obstruction and disrespect from those she expected to support her. Rejecting the role of a mere pawn, she emphasizes that relinquishing her seat could have had detrimental effects.
In an interview with News Room, she stated, “I need to remind people that this is politics, not church.” She reflects that her decision has been validated, particularly as her proposed successor would have come from the ANUG party, now involved with Azruddin Mohamed, an individual currently under U.S. sanctions.
Kissoon clarified that she acted independently, neither receiving pay nor being coerced by the ruling PPP, as they did not depend on her vote due to their majority status. Her party, TNM, and its allies, LJP and ANUG, had previously agreed to rotate their single seat following the 2020 elections, with Kissoon assuming the role after LJP’s Lennox Shuman.
However, upon joining the assembly, she found the cooperation lacking, leading to significant frustrations when her motions and bills went unacknowledged. This perception of isolation prompted her to assertively vote on essential issues. “The moment I was reprimanded for voting, I realized that remaining in my seat was crucial for the country’s interests,” Kissoon remarked, ultimately resolving to “play the game” again should the situation demand it. She acknowledges, “I have accepted that I broke the agreement, but I am okay with the decision I made.”
