Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has highlighted a pressing need for modernization in the U.S. air traffic control system and is urging the Senate to pass the Big Beautiful Bill, which allocates $12.5 billion for significant upgrades.
During a press conference at the Department of Transportation, Duffy described the outdated air traffic system, some components aging between 25 to 40 years, as in urgent need of a complete overhaul. He specifically addressed the recent challenges at Newark International Airport, where outdated infrastructure has caused radar and communication failures.
Emphasizing the necessity for a modernized system, Duffy stated, “We need Congress to act.” He noted recent improvements made in collaboration with Verizon, which successfully established a new fiber optic line between Philadelphia and New York to enhance stability in radar transmissions.
The issues at Newark, stemming from significant disruptions in its terminal radar approach control (TRACON), have led to delayed flights affecting passengers. Duffy pointed out that staffing shortages and runway construction have further compounded these delays, reducing the airport’s operational capacity from 50-54 departures per hour to just 28.
As training for additional air traffic controllers progresses, Duffy remains optimistic that this crucial modernization effort will alleviate ongoing delays and enhance air travel efficiency nationwide. He urged Congress to expedite the permitting process to facilitate swift implementation of the necessary upgrades.
